In Google Analytics 4 (GA4), you can define custom dimensions and metrics to capture and analyze data that is specific FUSE Events. These custom definitions help track additional data that GA4 doesn't collect by default like our custom events.
Here's a step-by-step guide to adding custom definitions in GA4:
Step 1: Log into Google Analytics
1. Go to the Google Analytics website
2. Make sure you are an Admin user as this is the level of permission required to make this change
Step 2: Navigate to "Custom Definitions"
1. In the left-hand menu, click on "Admin" (the gear icon at the bottom left of the page).
2. In the Property Settings column (the left column), locate and click on "Custom Definitions" under the "Data display" section.
Step 3: Choose the Type of Custom Definition
GA4 allows you to add two types of custom definitions:
Custom Dimensions: Additional information related to events or users, such as user roles, product categories, or custom user properties.
Custom Metrics: Custom numeric data values, such as custom revenue, session duration, or custom scores.
To add a new custom definition:
1. Click the "Create Custom Definition" button in the top-right corner.
2. This pop up will appear and you need to fill out for fuse variables 1 through 4.
3. Fill the above pop-up as seen below
- Dimension Name: Use the FUSE convention "FUSE Variable {number}". There are 4 Variables 1 through 4
- Scope: Select Event as the Scope
- 3. Event Parameter: This event parameter has already been preset to fuse_var1.
- 4. (Optional) Description: You may add some description to this to help others understand its purpose. You can understand more about the variables in the doc FUSE Trends in GA4
Your list should look something like this once you are done.
Step 4: Verify and Test Your Custom Definitions
After creating your custom definitions, make sure that the data is being captured correctly:
1. Go to "Events" under the "Events" tab in GA4 and verify if the event containing the custom parameters is being logged.
2. Check Realtime reports to confirm that your custom dimension or metric is being tracked correctly during live sessions.
3. You should see this being populated over time under the Events for fuse_click_result, fuse_toggle-filter, fuse_keyword_search
By following these steps, you should be able to add custom definitions to your GA4 property and start tracking additional data that’s important to your seeing what your users are searching for on your FUSE instance.
